Fluctuating-friction molecular motors

چکیده

We show that the correlated stochastic fluctuation of the friction coefficient can give rise to long-range directional motion of a particle undergoing Brownian random walk in a constant periodic energy potential landscape. The occurrence of this motion requires the presence of two additional independent bodies interacting with the particle via friction and via the energy potential, respectively, which can move relative to each other. Such three-body system generalizes the classical Brownian ratchet mechanism, which requires only two interacting bodies. In particular, we describe a simple two-level model of fluctuating-friction molecular motor that can be solved analytically. In our previous work [M.K., L.M and D.P. 2000 J. Nonlinear Opt. Phys. Mater. 9 157] this model has been first applied to understanding the fundamental mechanism of the photoinduced reorientation of dye-doped liquid crystals. Applications of the same idea to other fields such as molecular biology and nanotechnology can however be envisioned. As an example, in this paper we work out a model of the actomyosin system based on the fluctuating-friction mechanism. Molecular reorientation by photoinduced modulation of rotational mobility.

To explain the large photoinduced molecular reorientation phenomena observed in dye-doped liquids and liquid crystals, the hypothesis was formed that the rotational mobility of dye molecules is strongly altered during their electronic excitation. Here, we report the direct measurement of a 30%-50% mobility decrease of photoexcited anthraquinone dye molecules dissolved in a cyanophenyl liquid ho...

Several Issues in Modeling Molecular Motors

Protein motors play a central role in many cell functions. Understanding the operating principles of molecular motors is crucial to comprehending intracellular protein transport and cell motility. Due to the small size and the negligible inertia of molecular motors, the motor motion is damped by high viscous friction and is subject to large thermal excitations form the surrounding fluid environ...

Motion of molecular motor ratcheted by internal fluctuations and protein friction

We investigate theoretically a novel mechanism of transducing chemical energy into a directed force. A hypothetical motor protein is considered such that conformational changes induced by nucleotide binding and/or hydrolysis lead to asymmetric internal velocity fluctuations. We demonstrate that these fluctuations result in unidirectional motion if rectified by protein friction. The motor protei...

Tug of war in motility assay experiments.

The dynamics of two groups of molecular motors pulling in opposite directions on a rigid filament is studied theoretically. To this end we first consider the behavior of one set of motors pulling in a single direction against an external force using a new mean-field approach. Based on these results we analyze a similar setup with two sets of motors pulling in opposite directions in a tug of war...
